In the fall of 2019, I was approached by Sandra Graham (musicologist) and Randall Horton (Founder of American Music TV) to participate in a documentary project chronicling the life of Sam Lucas. Coming into this, I was not aware of the important legacy of this talented entertainer. After distinguishing himself as.a minstrel performer, Lucas went on to carve a unique and lucrative path as a multifaceted singer. It was my great privilege to portray this hidden figure!
This was such a fun project, and was my first time working with a green screen and camera crew. It was uncharted waters for this (primarily) classical singer! Enjoy, and consider purchasing Dr. Graham's book Spirituals and the Birth of a Black Entertainment Industry.
You can learn more about Sam Lucas here thanks to Middle Tennessee State University and Sandra Graham.
