Teaching

Vocal Masterclass presented at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
"When Marquese and I started our lessons I hadn’t sung in over 30 years...
Because of Marquese, I found my voice again. I am now in a choir and love singing"
~ Lori L., Voice Student

Teaching Philosophy

My goal in teaching voice lessons is to create a nurturing environment where artistic and technical development can occur for my students. Expression and technical facility must be mutually developed in order for students to realize their full identity as singers. My pedagogy is grounded in scientific principles of acoustics, resonance, and vocal anatomy. In lessons, we will focus on:

  • Identifying your unique resonance, and vocal timbre
  • Optimizing your resonance through body mapping
  • Releasing bodily tensions
  • Discovering deeper, abiding breath for singing and speaking
  • Exploring elements of acting and interpretation as related to vocal repertoire

Singers must align vocal technique with interpretation. When teaching students, I work to develop strong musicianship, healthy vocal technique, self-esteem, and strong acting abilities. Whether you want to learn to sing in your church choir, or dream of international operatic fame, I am happy to offer sensitive guidance and expertise!

Testimonials

  • Marquese is an instinctive teacher with an affinity for others.  They are deeply interested in technical, physiological solutions to problems (for which he possesses an extraordinary amount of knowledge for someone of their age and experience), while not neglecting the emotional element in teaching singing. I have enjoyed their presence in three of my classes over the past two years, and recommend them as enthusiastically as possible. They are a scholar and a committed musician.
    • ~Dr. Kathy Price, Associate Professor of Voice, Westminster Choir College (2014)

        • "The insistence and care with which they demanded that students think about, be with, and resonate (in multiple dimensions of that verb) with the music made singing, well, spiritual.  Over my 30 year career, I have won more than my share of teaching awards and I currently sit on the Teaching Excellence Committee over at the Kelley School.  I like to think I know good teaching and indeed, I often found myself stepping back from the actual learning of the lesson and simply observing Marquese as a teacher.  They really knows what they are doing.  They read their students well, as any good teacher must, so that they can know whether they need a stretch, a break, an explanation, a joke, or (I suspect, though they never provided this to me), a stern direction.  I learned some things, not just as a vocal student, but as a teacher from them too!  In any discipline, there are those who know the material well, but it is an additional talent to be able to teach well; Marquese is simply a great teacher."

"Because of Marquese, I found my voice again.  I am now in a choir and love singing. Marquese’s dedication to me as a student was so remarkable unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.  Their vast knowledge and ability to translate that to their teaching was a privilege to experience.  They have the kind of teaching style that inspired me so much I was singing all the time; and for this and everything else they taught me I will be forever grateful."
